The Man Behind Lingel’s Indian Success: A Personal Journey of Dr.h.c.Mario Schmidt
Falling in Love with Fenestration:
The journey into the world of fenestration began for Lingel’s India Managing Director, Dr h.c Mario Schmidt, in 1994, shortly after completing his studies in mechanical science. His fascination with this niche industry deepened, sparking a desire to explore and innovate further. In 2006, this passion brought him to India, a land where the UPVC (unplasticized polyvinyl chloride) sector was just emerging.
At that time, very few people in India were familiar with UPVC, a challenge that presented itself as an opportunity. The task was not just about selling windows and doors; it was about educating consumers. Starting from scratch, he gradually assembled a team—many of whom are still with the company today, holding key positions.
Slowly but surely, Lingel expanded beyond Rajasthan to other regions in India, and today, the company is recognized as one of the top five fenestration brands in the country.
Climbing the Ranks:
With over 20 years of experience in the fenestration industry, Lingel’s India Managing Director, Dr h.c. Mario Schmidt made waves early in his career. He was the youngest General Manager (factory head) in his German state in the field of windows and doors. In 2006, he took over as Managing Director at Lingel India, and by 2018, he had also become the Plant Head Director at Lingel Germany.
Through these years, he developed a clear vision and goals, and while the road to success was challenging, he found great guidance and mentorship in Mr. Karl Lingel. His leadership has been instrumental in Lingel’s growth in India, which today boasts sales offices and experience centers in all major cities. The company’s expanding dealer network reflects the ambition to bring more like-minded partners into the fold.
Innovation at the Core: Setting Trends in Fenestration
Shaping the Future of the Industry:
Lingel has always considered itself a trendsetter, particularly in India. In 2008/2009, the company introduced the double shutters window system, a design where the glass shutters open outside while the mesh shutters open inside—an innovation well ahead of its time. Lingel didn’t stop there. In 2010, they brought to market the first glass houses and conservatories.
During and after the pandemic, Lingel delved deep into research and development (R&D), leading to groundbreaking products such as LPG glazing and the Lingel Safe Box (LSB). One of the company’s proudest achievements has been the development of the largest aluminum system ever seen in India.
Lingel’s constant exchange of knowledge with its German head office has been a key factor in these innovations, helping the company adapt products to suit the Indian market. Glass houses and conservatories, for instance, have been modified to be more affordable while maintaining their unique appeal, opening up a new market for such products in India.
Vision for the Future:
Looking ahead, Lingel aims to continue its upward trajectory, not just in terms of customer numbers but also through innovations that keep them at the forefront of the fenestration industry. The company’s commitment to offering diverse and innovative solutions ensures that customers always have the best options available to meet their needs.
Lingel’s focus on sustainability and responsible business practices is evident in its efforts to reduce carbon footprints and educate the next generation through its Lingel Training Academy. With expert trainers from Germany, the academy equips the team with the necessary skills to serve customers better.
