TURNING A SIMPLE MANUFACTURING CHALLENGE INTO AN ENGINEERING VENTURE

For Charles Aldrich, entrepreneurship began not with a business plan, but with a problem on the manufacturing floor.

A high school graduate from Oconto, Wisconsin, Charles joined the U.S. Marines in 1976, earning Good Conduct and Expeditionary medals and achieving Rifle Expert qualification twice. After his service, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from the University of Wisconsin, with minors in Computer Science and Mathematics.

His early engineering career exposed him to different manufacturing environments and the challenges faced by production teams. At one company, he was asked to teach employees how to read fractional-inch tape measures. At another, he was asked why quality was becoming a problem.

Charles discovered that the engineering drawings were in decimal inches, while production employees were using fractional-inch tape measures. Workers therefore had to convert measurements before using them.

His solution was simple: Why not use a decimal-inch tape measure?

When he could not find a suitable product, he decided to create one himself. Because the manufacturer required an order of approximately 3,000 units, Charles founded Aldrich Engineer LLC.

What began as a solution to a specific manufacturing problem became a specialized engineering business.

A MISSION FOCUSED ON PRACTICAL SOLUTIONS

The original mission of Aldrich Engineer LLC was to develop and sell decimal-inch tape measures that would eliminate unnecessary conversions between engineering drawings and production measurements.

That mission remains at the heart of the company today.

The initial 25-foot/300-inch decimal-inch tape measure has since been joined by products including a 5-foot/60-inch tailor-style tape measure, a 120-inch steel tape measure, and a 165-foot/1,980-inch steel tape measure.

These products were developed largely in response to customer requirements, reflecting Charles’s belief that useful innovation begins with understanding real-world needs.

MAKING MEASUREMENT MORE ACCURATE

Charles believes that measurement should be straightforward, particularly in manufacturing environments where accuracy is critical.

When decimal-inch drawings are paired with decimal-inch measuring tools, workers can measure directly without converting measurements into fractions. According to Charles, a $20 decimal-inch tape measure can potentially prevent manufacturing problems involving thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars in scrap and rework.

This specialized focus sets Aldrich Engineer LLC apart.

Charles has also secured U.S. Patent No. 11,796,294 for decimal-inch tape measures, strengthening the innovative foundation of the company’s products.

A LEAN BUSINESS BUILT ON DISCIPLINE

Charles is the only employee of Aldrich Engineer LLC and personally focuses on designing decimal-inch tape measures, while manufacturing is subcontracted to specialized vendors.

His business philosophy emphasizes financial discipline. He believes debt is not beneficial to his business and prefers to use profits from sales to fund the development of new products.

For Charles, growth is about building practical solutions, earning customer trust, and reinvesting in the next opportunity.

PRODUCTS INSPIRED BY CUSTOMER NEEDS

Some of the company’s most interesting developments have come directly from customers.

The original 25-foot/300-inch tape measure established the foundation of the company. The 5-foot/60-inch tailor-style tape measure has also found an educational application, helping preschool children learn numbers, counting, and measurement.

A school bus manufacturer requested a 10-foot decimal-inch tape measure for measuring seat placement during production, while an aerospace company requested a tape measure ‘over 110 ft (developed 165 ft)’ for measuring aircraft wings during assembly.

These projects demonstrate how customer challenges can become opportunities for innovation.

INNOVATION REQUIRES FOLLOW-THROUGH

Charles believes an innovative idea has little value unless it becomes a useful product.

He experienced this philosophy while developing a tape measure with a manufacturing partner. The first two versions failed to meet his expectations, but continued collaboration resulted in an acceptable third version.

For Charles, usability is as important as technical performance. Since the purpose of the decimal-inch tape measure is to eliminate conversions, the markings must be easy to read and understand.

His approach is straightforward: solve the problem properly, rather than settle for an incomplete solution.

QUALITY BUILDS LONG-TERM TRUST

Technical excellence is the starting point for Charles when developing relationships with customers and vendors.

He believes that specifications must be accurate because even small inaccuracies can create larger operational problems. One example involved a supplier whose shipping-box dimensions referred to external rather than internal measurements. Although the boxes could have been used for certain applications, they did not meet the intended requirement, so Charles chose another supplier.

For him, quality is also personal. He puts his name on the products he designs and sells and wants to be proud of what he delivers.

CONTINUOUS LEARNING THROUGH EXPERIENCE

Charles continues to learn by attending seminars and industry events, where he connects with customers, vendors, and other professionals.

Aldrich Engineer LLC uses subcontractors for manufacturing, while digital information provides an important record of transactions. Advanced engineering software may be used by manufacturing partners when necessary, but it is not central to Charles’s own operations.

His philosophy remains practical: technology should support the solution, not overshadow it.

BUILDING THE FUTURE OF DECIMAL MEASUREMENT

Traditional tape measures have existed since the 19th century, while decimal-inch tape measures are a much newer development. With decimal-inch drawing standards becoming increasingly relevant to modern manufacturing, Charles sees significant opportunities ahead.

Over the next three to five years, one of his primary goals is to encourage state and federal government agencies to purchase his products directly.

He believes that broader adoption can demonstrate the practical benefits of eliminating unnecessary measurement conversions.

DEFINING SUCCESS

For Charles, success is not simply about the size of a company or its financial performance. Recognition from companies that purchase his products and from media organizations that communicate their benefits is especially meaningful.

Ultimately, his greatest satisfaction comes from knowing that his products solve genuine problems.

His advice to aspiring engineers and entrepreneurs is equally straightforward:

“Find something to motivate you every day. When you finish a project, with pride you can say, I did that.”

A LIFE BEYOND ENGINEERING

Charles’s adventurous spirit extends far beyond his professional career.

He has participated in plays, competed in pool and square dancing, sung with The Oak Ridge Boys at a concert at Knott’s Berry Farm, and gone skydiving with a friend. In competitive square dancing, he achieved second place six times and third place once at national convention competitions. He also earned silver and bronze medals at the Senior Games in Utah.

His interests include disc golf and ping pong, while one of his most remarkable adventures was cycling to and through 49 states over three summers.

These experiences reflect the same qualities that have shaped his professional journey—curiosity, determination, resilience, and a willingness to take on new challenges.

A MESSAGE FOR THE NEXT GENERATION

Charles believes that everyone should assess where they are, determine where they want to be, and create a path to get there.

He encourages people not to become discouraged by setbacks. Every experience provides knowledge; even failures can teach us valuable lessons about what does not work.

His message is simple: celebrate accomplishments, learn from failures, and retain the motivation to keep moving forward.

For Charles Aldrich, engineering is ultimately about more than designing products. It is about identifying a real problem, developing a practical solution, and having the persistence to turn an idea into something useful.

What began with a simple manufacturing challenge has evolved into Aldrich Engineer LLC, a specialized venture dedicated to making measurement easier, reducing unnecessary conversions, improving quality, and helping manufacturers build better products.
